Are you moving with pets?

The moving process can be a stressful situation. If you have pets it can be even more stressful especially if moving long distances. Just like we have professional movers to assist packing and moving our household items and furniture there are professional pet movers. Yes, you heard that correctly, there are companies that specialize in moving your pets for you.

So what do pet movers do?

In a way a pet mover is like a travel agent for your pets. Moving animals is complicated and highly regulated so pet movers are here to provide the expertise to move your animals from one location to another being especially helpful during a long cross-country move.

Pet movers make all the transportation arrangements for your pets, whether by air, ground or boat, and ensure you have all the necessary paperwork including medical certificates.

Pet movers' services range from bare-bones budget transportation to "white glove" concierege service that includes pick up and drop off of your pet(s). The specific pet moving service you choose will depend on your budget and pet moving needs. Costs vary depending upon which services you need, however a domestic move within the US typically runs no less than $500. If you're traveling internationally pet moving services are often much pricier with fees usually starting around $2,000. It is recommended to find a pet moving company that has at least five years of experience. The most important criteria is making sure that your potential pet moving company is a member of the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association. Members of this non profit organization are required to adhere by strict rules and regulations when it comes to transporting your pets. They're also registered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and must abide by the rules and regulations of the USDA's Animal Welfare Act. A reputable mover will ensure your pet is microchipped and has its health certificate (an APHIS Form 7001 for travel within the U.S. and additional documents for international travel). They will also check to make sure all vaccines and import permits are completed in time for the trip. If you come across a pet mover who doesn't seem well versed in this information it is best to keep looking and find a different pet moving company to hire.
